Inglorious Prey:

The Incarceration of James Montgomery

22nd March 2017

2-4pm

York St John University, Quad South Hall

In 1795 Sheffield newspaper editor and poet James Montgomery was accused of treason and thrown into York Castle Prison, charged with a crime he did not commit. Whilst locked up with the country’s most dangerous radicals Montgomery wrote some of his greatest poetry. Now, as part of the York Literature Festival 2017, we invite you to join Dr Adam James Smith as he tells the moving story of Montgomery’s incarceration, bringing to life the poems and letters he wrote from his cell in York Castle Prison.
